EN 61340 – The standard for controlling electrostatic discharge (ESD)
EN 61340-5-1 is a European and international standard that specifies the requirements for controlling electrostatic discharge (ESD) in environments where sensitive electronic components are handled. The purpose of the standard is to help organisations prevent damage to electronic devices caused by static electricity. Electrostatic discharge occurs when a build-up of static electricity is suddenly released. Even very small discharges often too small for humans to feel can damage delicate electronic components such as microchips, circuit boards and semiconductors. The EN 61340-5-1 standard provides a framework for controlling these risks through equipment, workplace design and protective clothing. When applied to ESD workwear, the EN 61340-5-1 standard ensures that garments help control the static charge generated by the wearer. ESD clothing typically contains conductive or carbon fibres woven into the fabric, which allow static electricity to dissipate safely rather than building up on the body.
